M.S.U. & Ole Miss Basking in Their Post-Win Glory

After two big wins for Mississippi teams last weekend, Ole Miss and Mississippi State are tied at number three in the AP poll. The Rebels haven’t been ranked this high since 1963, while this is the Bulldog’s highest ranking ever.

The scene was something to see in Oxford as Ole Miss knocked off Alabama on national TV. Mississippi State also pulled off an upset against Texas A & M, securing two Mississippi teams ranked in the top four in the country. Tommy Domenico, host of Happy Hour with Tommy D., says, "Right now, we’re sitting on top of the world, having the cover of Sports Illustrated, being talked about on ESPN, FOX, and all the sports outlets across the nation, it’s pretty impressive. It doesn’t happen too often."

The SEC is one of the toughest conferences in college football, with five of the top 15 teams coming from the west division and one coming from the east, staying on top in southern sports is easier said than done. Domenico also says, "It’s a grind in the SEC, especially the teams in the SEC West, as we’re going to see again this Saturday, huge games with Mississippi State facing Auburn, might be the biggest game or the second biggest game in Mississippi State history."

When local sports teams are doing poorly, or in this case, riding high, local sports talk show hosts are the ones who get to hear what the fans are thinking first. Domenico also says, "From what I’ve been hearing from Mississippi State and Ole Miss fans is they’re almost taking a head coach’s approach to it, you know, enjoy it for a few days and then get ready for this weekend. The schedule is grueling for these teams.”

As long as you’re on top, you might as well enjoy it, and also make sure that your rival knows how well you’re doing. Domenico also says, "They’re taking it in, they’re enjoying it for sure, they’re talking trash, and I know that both of them are looking forward to the Egg Bowl, hopefully undefeated."

If things continue to go well, the first championship playoff in college football history may include two teams from the Magnolia State, but Tommy has a message for fans of another Mississippi team trying to get to the top.

He closes, "Southern Miss fans, bear with it one more year, ‘cause 2015 is our year!"
