Gautier Gators fall short to West Point in 5A State Championship Game
The Gautier Gators represented the Coast in the 5A High School State Championship Game!
The Gators already made history by winning their very first South State title.
Gators started their championship debut with the ball as Mr. Football Trey Irving located Kainen Rush to move the chains and then some to enter the red zone.
Next play is Irving with a shuffle pass right to the freshman Latrell Pogue, who refuses to go down and the Gators strike first! Touchdown Gautier!
West Point with the ball and they’re going for it on 4th down and boy was that risky with Fred Nicholson and the boys of the swamp on the other side and it’s a turnover on downs.
Second quarter, Irving makes space and finds Devon Garrett down field and he gets the first down, but Gators are unable to capitalize and the Green Wave could go on to put 28 unanswered point on the board.
Fast forward to the final 30 seconds of the game, Wave leading 28-14, Irving flips it over to Kasin Thomas and it’s a touchdown for Gautier.
Ultimately, it wasn’t enough as the Gators fall short to West Point with a final score of 28-21.
Here’s what Head Coach Marc High said about his gritty Gator team. “This is the most resilient team I’ve ever coached. I’ve look at them and see that there’s a lot of firsts that this team did and we’re proud of them. Now they know the next step they’ve got to take. You know, we feel good. Our kids never gave up. They kept fighting. If the community and school isn’t proud of them, because this group right here is a fighting bunch of kids and they mean a lot to me.”
No matter the score, these guys made history. Undefeated district champions, an 11-game winning streak, and their first state championship appearance! Congratulations Gautier!
