USPS decides to keep mail processing center in Gulfport
The United States Postal Service announced today that certain local mail processing operations will remain at the Gulfport facility.
This decision to leave those operations in Gulfport was made possible due to a strategy aimed at increasing efficiency, improving service quality, and saving USPS an additional $3 billion per-year nationwide.
In simple terms, single piece mail that is sent from Gulfport to be delivered in Gulfport will continue to be processed at its current location. This update follows a previous USPS decision to shift local originating mail processing operations to the Jackson Processing and Distribution Center in Jackson beginning in 2025.
The Gulfport facility will also undergo a $2.3 million modernization plan to increase its services that was announced in April. The changes will not affect business mail entry, Post Office, station, and branch retail services. The plan also includes amenities for employees.
Once the Gulfport facility becomes a Local Processing Center, it is expected to handle package mailing and shipping, letters, and flats. The LPC is also expected to offer express services and accept bulk and permit mail.
Earlier this year, the Gulfport processing facility was part of the Mail Processing Facility Reviews. The objective of the reviews was to find cost efficiencies, primarily through transportation savings. By implementing the changes proposed in the request filed with the PRC, the Postal Service intends to achieve efficiencies and, reduce transportation costs.
