A look inside the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum on Veterans Day

Located in the heart of Camp Shelby on the outskirts of Hattiesburg, the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum has long been providing both veterans and civilians alike with the opportunity to recognize the heroes of America’s past and present.

This Veterans Day proved to be no different, as a stroll the the halls of the museum highlighted the American bravery of our armed service men and women throughout the ages, from the trenches of World War 1 to the modern war on terror. Relics, weapons, and life size models served as reminders of American sacrifice, and showcased Mississippians who answered the ultimate call for their country.

For Robert Mitro, a U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran who find himself there on Veterans Day, the museum serves as essential reminder of the cost that has been paid for the freedoms of our country.

“It’s very nice that Mississippi has the facilities to honor the veterans and make people aware of the sacrifices that they went through. People should visit these places to remember the past so it doesn’t occur in the future.”

Many of the employees who work at the museum are veterans themselves. For them ensuring that the stories and voices of those who served before them and alongside them, is the best way to honor their service.

“There’s an affinity that soldiers have for the people that have come before them and you just kind of feel that connection here. That’s what I really like about the job as well, being able to tell the stories of not only the individuals but the places as well,” said Joe Wise, a museum employee and Army veteran.

One common theme that became apparent when talking to veterans throughout the day, is that for them, remembering those who have answered the call of their country is not something that is only reserved for Veterans Day.

“Veterans Day is kind of 24/7, 365. It’s kind of hard to pin down one specific day because we’re thinking about people all year long. Everyday is Veterans Day around here,” said Joe Wise.
