Gulfport officer goes viral saving cat

One Gulfport police officer is going viral on social media during his routine patrol and stopped traffic on Tuesday morning to rescue a kitten on Highway 49.
Officer Mike Hauler spotted a kitten that had been injured trying to cross the busy highway. One local woman posted the photo to social media, capturing Officer Hauler’s heroic action, kneeling down to pick up the kitten with his squad car blocking traffic.
Once he removed the kitten from the scene, he put the kitten in his car and had plans to take it to 8th Avenue to resuscitate.
Officer Hauler tells News 25 why he decided to stop to save the kitten’s life. “I’m a huge animal lover. I don’t like to see any animals in danger. If I can do my part to save one life then I will. Unfortunately, I didn’t get there in time this time.”
The kitten did not survive his injuries.
Officer Hauler’s message in this situation is to call law enforcement rather than get out of your own vehicle in the middle of traffic and put yourself in danger.
