Beauvoir still wants Confederate monuments
Historical changes in New Orleans and now Virginia with the removal of Confederate monuments. Officials at Beauvoir say they’re still ready with open arms to give the monuments a new home.
Masked crews used a massive crane and trucks to remove a controversial statue of former Confederate President Jefferson Davis last week in New Orleans. It’s the second of four Confederate-era monuments to be removed from city landmarks. And now a fierce battle erupts in Virginia over one city’s plan to remove a Confederate statue.
Beauvoir Executive Director Thomas Payne says putting the statues away in a warehouse is a disgrace. “It is, in my opinion, an attempt to erase history and to defile the names of the people who the monuments represent and the history of the people who the monuments represent and we would rather have them here with us where we could revere and commemorate our history. I’ve called the mayor’s office. I’ve texted members of the mayor’s staff and we made it abundantly clear in the press that we are willing and ready to take the statues.”
Payne says his calls and attempts to reach out to New Orleans city officials have not yet been returned.
