25 teams in 25 days: West Harrison Hurricanes
“You know we kind of slacked off at the end which led us to have a 5-5 season,” senior Joshua Lane said. “I will ensure you that will not happen this season.”
The West Harrison Hurricanes started off last season hot. A 4-1 start had the Hurricanes prime to make their first playoff game in school history, but finishing the season 1-4 in the teams final five games put a stop to that happening. Head coach Quincy Patrick and his players are ready to learn from their past mistakes to make sure their future is brighter than ever.
“We don’t lose, we learn,” coach Patrick said. “We learned a lot of great things, you know, how to practice and how not to practice. We are blessed to have a great schedule in a great district every Friday night is a challenge but we learn from that as well.”
“It’s definitely a new year,” senior John Godber said. “We have completely forgotten about last year, we have been working, and we are ready. I want to prove that we are not old West Harrison, you know, we are something new. We have really built this program up and we are ready to play.”
Coach Patrick says that everything starts on the practice field for the Hurricanes to ultimately reach their end of season goals and make the playoffs for the first time in school history.
“Every step is very important and you can’t skip a step,” he said. “It’s like building a house, you know, you can’t put the roof on first. You have to lay the foundation, frame it, then hang the sheet wall and all that good stuff. Football is the same way.”
The foundation has been laid, the framing has been put in place and the sheet wall has been hung. All that is left for the Hurricanes is to go out and put the proverbial roof on their 2024 season with things starting this Friday in their jamboree game against the Gautier Gators.
“Friday man, I love it, you know what I am saying?” Lane said. “I love Mondays, I love it all. Friday’s are one of the best days for us because, you know what I am saying, we like to go out with a bang.”
“I have been waiting on this for a really long time.” Godber said. “This is a great group of guys, I am very lucky to lead them, and I am ready to have a great season.”
“I am probably going to be the only coach that says this but I can wait for Friday nights because I love every part of football,” coach Patrick said. “Like today’s practice…I will be just as excited about today as I will be on August 30th so I am just excited.”
When you are just as excited to practice as you are for the games, you know you are in the right business. West Harrison will open their season on August 30th, on the road, against Greene County,
