Gulfport Police and Fire take ‘ALERRT’ training
Members of the Gulfport Police and Fire Departments are working together to perfect their response to active shooter situations by taking part in a new training program called ‘Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training.’
Through the ALERRT training, first responders learn how to work together to render aid as quickly as possible.
In an active shooter situation, it’s all hands-on deck to save lives. By creating new communication techniques and sharing plans, the goal of this training is for the two departments to take what they’ve learned to lend a helping hand in serious situations, even if their specific job is done at a scene. Adjunct Instructor Robb Furlow said, “Our goal is to stop the killing and then stop the dying in a rapid-causality evacuation. The rescue task force model really pushes that, the timelines. There’s only so much time people have and getting medical personnel to them quickly and efficiently is a lifesaver.”
This training also allows first responders to become instructors so they can share what they learned with their co-workers.
