Mississippi Aquarium to continue fundraising efforts for penguin habitat
Following Wednesday night’s Penguin-A-Thon, the Mississippi Aquarium is hoping to continue fundraising efforts for its new African penguin habitat.
The Facebook live fundraiser gave the community a chance to interact virtually and raised a few thousand dollars to go towards giving the colony of penguins a permanent home in the aquarium. The penguins are currently housed off-campus and visit the aquarium for special events.
Six African penguins were special guests at Penguin-A-Thon, as well as many VIPs who participated in a variety of fundraising challenges. One VIP was WXXV News 25’s own Chief Meteorologist Ryan Mahan, who shared how excited he was to be helping with the event.
“Well, I’ve had an opportunity to meet the penguins a couple of times so far in my career, both here on the coast and up in Hattiesburg,” Mahan said. “Now things are looking pretty good for them, as far as getting a local home here. There’s 11 different penguins, and they all seem to have their very own personalities.”
The fundraiser will continue online through August 15th, with the ultimate goal of raising sixty-thousand dollars.
The Mississippi Aquarium will host more events in the coming months, and as soon as enough money is raised, work will begin towards giving the penguin colony a forever home.
