Miss Black Mississippi, Alexis Williams, stopped by studio to discuss her reign and upcoming pageant
Miss Black Mississippi, Alexis Williams, stopped by the WXXV News 25 studio to tell us more about her reign, community outreach programs, and platform.
Williams is a Gulfport native, who will be representing the Magnolia State in the 2025 Miss Black USA Pageant happening in Washington, D.C. this year.
She shares what motivated her to get involved in the pageant world.
“Representation matters and often-times, you can’t aspire to be someone or be something you haven’t seen. And, as far as the pageant system goes, it wasn’t until 2020 that Mississippi selected the first African American woman to represent Mississippi at the Miss USA Pageant so although that is a significant milestone for individual achievement, I mean it also speaks to how slow and yet ongoing it is for representation for African Americans in areas, where we are historically marginalized. So I want someone from my neighborhood or someone on the Mississippi Gulf Coast to look at me, the little girls to look at me and say I can see myself in her,” said Williams.
Her platform is ‘Live in Color’, where she empowers women who have expereinced a miscarriage or child lost. Williams aims to bring awareness and help those mothers who maybe suffering in silence.
Williams even hosted a Mother’s Day Bereavement Brunch, where women were able to come together and share their experinces with child loss.
What’s next for Williams, you may ask? She will be competing in the 2025 Miss Black USA Pageant in D.C. in September. She is currently raising money to pay for the competition. The registration fee is $1,200, and hotel accommodations are estimated at $1,100.
