Meggan Monday: Hubbard’s Waveland Hardware celebrates 70 years

For 70 years, Hubbard’s Waveland Hardware has been a part of the community. The family-owned business is run by Richard and David Hubbard and caters to everyone from the handyman to the construction crew.

David Hubbard said, “Hardware stores, it’s a fix it place. Most people come in here, they’re fixing something. They’re repairing something. Most people aren’t mechanics and you know, we can help them to get it done. And they appreciate it and they come back. So, it’s a nice, it’s a nice atmosphere in here. You know, everybody’s always happy. Everybody’s always talking, you know. See very, very few grumpy people. Very few. You know, it’s amazing, but I think we kind of set the mood when they come in, you know, because we’re happy to see them.

“My dad had a sawmill just a block over and he’d bring his lumber over here to a little shed and sell it out of the shed, and then at 54 he decided he wanted to expand. So, we built the store. My dad and my uncle decided to venture out and build a little hardware store to go with the sawmill and the business evolved into what it is today. It’s a second generation, hopefully going into a third generation. Our customers are more like neighbors to us because we know them all, we know about them. We know about their families and vice versa.”

“This has been my career. This has been my life, you know, and it’s been good. And I’m a talker so I like to talk with my customers and get to know them and vice versa. You know, it’s pretty cool. Personally, I choose to spend my money with somebody who is more than just a clerk, who is more or less a neighbor and friend. You know, I think small businesses like this is pretty much what built this country. Our thanks for our success go to the community and the people that live here and the loyalty to our business, you know for these past 70 years, because it’s the people who have made this business. Without our customers we’d be absolutely nothing.”

Congratulations to the Hubbards on 70 years in business. They’ve seen a lot from their store on Nicholson Avenue and they are still going strong.
