Seabee killed in accident won’t be forgotten

Family, friends, and the Seabee community are mourning the death of a Navy Seabee killed over the weekend in a wreck near D’Iberville. The 27-year-old was stationed at the Seabee Base in Gulfport.
News 25’s Gina Tomlinson spoke with his best friend who says he won’t let the memory of his friend be forgotten nor his staunch dedication to always putting others before himself.
“He was the kindest person I ever met. He put everyone before himself.”
Stationed at the Gulfport Seabee Base for only a year, 27-year-old Navy Seabee Jimmy Truong made a lasting impression. Working alongside fellow Seabee Cameron Elwin, the two mechanics became best friends sharing a strong passion for cars. “Whenever we were bored, we’d go out for a drive and just kind of hang out and go to a couple car meets with people that shared the same interests as us.”
Jimmy’s last ride ended Saturday afternoon near Lamey Bridge Road in D’Iberville. According to authorities, the San Diego native was ejected from the motorcycle he was riding and pronounced dead at the scene.
Jimmy’s death is riveting for his best friend. Cameron was with Jimmy the night before the accident and he’s still in shock. “This is my first time losing someone this close to me.”
Cameron says Jimmy had a big heart and a mind geared by motivation. “He’d come into my room every day after work and just tell me we’re going to the gym and he doesn’t care what i say. We’re going to work out and better ourselves and same thing doing stuff with the Navy.”
Jimmy was close to his family in San Diego. Cameron says Jimmy wanted to join the Navy to support an extended family of his own. “One of the main reasons, from what he said, to join the Navy was to be able to provide for himself and his family, to be someone who can lend assistance and also just to serve his country.”
Serving our country and others during his short time here on Earth, living a legacy by a young Seabee whose life ended much too soon. “He just put everyone before him,” said Cameron. “He was just by far one of the best people I ever met.”
