Keesler Air Force Base celebrates military spouses
The month of May is Military Spouse Appreciation Month and service members at Keesler Air Force Base spent the day honoring military spouses.
May 10th is recognized as Military Spouse Day around the nation and Keesler Air Force Base is holding its annual celebration at the base’s marina.
The appreciation day began 40 years ago under the Ronald Reagan Administration in 1984. The celebration consists of exposing spouses to various programs the base offers to military partners and their families.
A few military spouses share what the day means to them and what it’s like overcoming the struggles of being a military spouse. Lt. Col. Katherine Kuc said, “Dual military is very similar to just being a regular married couple. You still have your challenges that you work though. Assignments can still be stressful.”
Military spouse Harry Weller said, “In the beginning, it was a struggle, just because it was more of a hey, he is a male spouse, out of sight, out of mind. He can take care of himself, but over the pasts 19 years, I’ve been a shift where there’s seen more male spouses where there have been more like, oh, they struggle just as much as the ladies struggled. You don’t have to take the burden on yourself. You can go out and find what you need.”
“Military spouses are so special because they are flexible. They’re adaptable. They’re resilient. They’re exactly the type of people that we need in our community who really are the heartbeat behind our organization.”
