Symphony guest artist, Pianist Albert Cano Smit, performed at West Elementary

Mississippi Gulf Coast Symphony Guest Artist and Pianist Albert Cano Smit spoke at assemblies for West Elementary School’s second and third graders in Gulfport this morning.
He played selections from Bach, Ravel, and Gershwin, and took questions about his artistry, how he undertook a career in music, and his world-wide travels.
He also led both classes in a Spanish chamber music exercise with the student supplying the percussion section while he supplied the piano.
He completed his visit with a performance of several student-requested songs, including “Golden Hour” and “Jingle Bells.” Later he visited the strings, band, and choral students at Bayou View Middle School.
Cano Smit’s appearance is part of the Symphony’s ongoing effort to support music education across the Coast, including guest artist appearances in schools, a concert usher program, and the Symphony’s coordinate Youth Orchestra.
He will be the featured pianist Saturday evening for the Symphony’s 7:30 p.m. “Rhapsody in Blue” concert in the Immersive Media Performing Arts Center on the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Harrison County Campus in Gulfport.
