Gulfport powerlifting continues historic run, winning state championships for the 7th time in eight years
When you look up the word “dominance” online, or even in the dictionary if those are still used, there is probably a picture of the Gulfport Admirals boys powerlifting team.
Over the weekend the group brought home another state championship – their seventh in eight years.
The Admirals powerlifting team traveled to Jackson over the weekend and came back home with another state championship. Five athletes on the team were named to the “Super 12” list. Meaning they are the best powerlifters in the entire state for their weight class. Sports 25 had the chance to speak with senior captain Taylor Ladner and junior two-way sports star Davis Ornes after their recent accomplishments and both spoke on their programs dominance and how much of a team-first mentality they truly have.
“I mean for sure, like, when we walk in the meets you can feel the energy is different when we walk in,” said Ornes. “I’s just such a dominant program.”
“It means everything,” said Ladner. “Individually I didn’t do that great at the meet but just watching my team succeed, I would lose 1,000 more times just to see my team succeed every single time. It’s just a great experience.
