Former Ocean Springs high school baseball star gets Opening Day nod for the Chicago White Sox

A few weeks ago former George County high school pitcher Justin Steele was named the Opening Day starter for the Chicago Cubs.

Over the weekend, Ocean Springs alum Garrett Crochet was named the Opening Day starter for the Chicago White Sox.

2 of the 30 pitchers taking the mound on Opening Day are from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It can’t be understated how incredible that is.

WXXV Sports Director Jevan McCoskey had the chance to speak with Crochet’s high school coach Brian Rea on how cool of an opportunity this is for his former ace.

Rae said, “You know we are all big fans of Garrett. Those that have coached him and all of his teammates, you know, to be able to be tabbed as the Opening Day starter is a once in a lifetime honor.”

Crochet will take the mound on March 28th against the Detroit Tigers where he could possibly face former Biloxi high school star Colt Keith.
