Biloxi youth leagues move locations as A.J. Holloway Sports Complex continues construction

Baseball and softball players are ready to slide into the season, but they’re not going to be hitting any home runs at the A.J. Holloway Sports Complex for a little while longer.

The city of Biloxi began construction on the A.J. Holloway Sports Complex in September of last year.

The project was estimated to take about 270 days but has seen rain delays.

One problem this five-million-dollar upgrade aims to fix is poor drainage. Ironically, these same drainage issues are an inconvenience for playing ball… and construction.

The work crew moved their efforts to higher grounds and started laying turf on the softball fields.

The city will be starting the season on two other fields – Savarro and Todd Migues Park – both of which have new sod and will receive updated led field lights ahead of the season start date, March 25.

“We have different parks in the city we’re been trying to get up and running – getting lights on the field, getting ground-work prepped,” said Jaime Lee, Biloxi Parks and Recreation assistant director. “Hopefully, there won’t be any setbacks to the start of the season. The worst thing that we could do with this investment is to rush it, get them on the fields, and do damage to the field.”

So long as the project goes well from here, the fields may be ready before the end of the season.
