MDMR hosts crab trap cleanup program

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources held a public cleanup, collecting almost 400 derelict crab traps.

They had help from 91 volunteers and crab fishermen.

The program ran from February 22nd through the 24th.

Only 46 traps were recovered at the Bayou Caddy Boat Launch in Bay St. Louis while 132 traps were recovered from the Ocean Springs Harbor.

The most traps were recovered at the Pascagoula Point Park with 220 being retrieved.

The crab trap removal program began in 1999 and the program has facilitated the removal of over 22,000 traps.
