Despite growing voter registrations, Mississippi’s voter turnout remains low
Voter turnout hit rock bottom during the 2022 midterms in Mississippi. Since then, the state has seen a steady rise in active voters.
Mississippi has historically had a low voter turnout compared to other states, but especially had a tough year during the 2022 midterm with only 30% of registered voters turning in a ballot.
This came as a surprise to Secretary of State Michael Watson who had launched multiple efforts to get people to the polls, but since then the state has seen a steady rise in active voters.
260,000 new voters have been registered and Watson tells us he has noticed young people showing an interest in voting.
“I think what I’m excited about, when I go speak to these young people, they have got some great questions,” Watson said. “They are talking more about elections than they have my past years in the state senate. I’m excited to hear that, to hear their interest in elections and why it’s important that they go vote. So, maybe our next generation here that rescue us and return great numbers back to voting.”
So far the numbers are still looking low for the upcoming election, with only 15,000 absentee requests.
