Gulfport school district to hold public information to talk a potential middle school football merger

The Gulfport school district is considering combining the football programs Central middle school and Bayou View middle school.

School corporation leaders believe it could lead to more success at the high school level if student-athletes start playing with one another at a younger age. Before any decision is made, the school corporation wants to give the public a chance to voice their opinion on the matter.

On Wednesday, March 13th, there will be a public informational hearing where anyone who would like to voice their opinion or have questions asked can do so. It will be in the Gulfport high school auditorium at 6:00 in the evening.

WXXV Sports Director Jevan McCoskey spoke with Gulfport school district athletic director Matt Walters about just one of the reasons he believes this is a positive idea. He said, “We have looked at schools around the state and nobody with multiple feeder middle school programs plays for a state championship. So we think this is the best opportunity for us to give our kids the best possible chance that we can give them.”

Walters made it very clear that there has not been any decision to go through with this possible merger. He added that he is hoping for a good turnout next Wednesday to hear as many opinions before a final decision is made.
