Gulfport announces commission to create new flag for the city

Gulfport has put together a committee to research and come up with a new flag for the city.

City officials announced that the Gulfport Flag Commission has been formed to design a modern flag “that captures Gulfport’s vibrant heritage and progress.”

Mayor Billy Hewes said the commission will seek the community’s input to create a symbol to represent Gulfport “for generations.”

Frank Bordeaux, who served on the Mississippi Flag Commission to create the current state flag, will chair the commission.

“Having experienced the unifying power of a flag in Mississippi, I am honored to lead an effort that will reflect and celebrate the essence of Gulfport today while laying a foundation for tomorrow,” said Bordeaux.

Also on the committee is Vice Chairman Glen East, the superintendent of Gulfport School District.

“Gulfport’s educational community is a pillar of innovation. I am excited to see our students and educators play a pivotal role in creating a new city flag, leaving a lasting educational legacy,” he said.
