Remembering Fallen Deputy Jeremy Malone

George County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Malone was shot and killed in the line of duty Thursday night.

The deputy was performing a traffic stop on Highway 98 when the incident occurred.

The suspected shooter, identified as Rickey Powell of Purvis by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, drove off, leading to a chase into Perry County.

Deputy Jeremy Malone was known by law enforcement agencies across the Gulf Coast. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and surrounding police forces offered help immediately following the incident.

Biloxi Police Chief John Miller had a connection to Malone. He swore the deputy in as a reserve officer in 2018 to help with special events in Biloxi. “Having been in that position before, I understand what George County Sheriff’s Department is going through and what they’re going to continue to go through for a good while. So, we just want to be there to show our support, do whatever we can do to help.”

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said, “We have a unique bond and a connection to one another, no matter what agency we work with. But during a tragic event like this, that bond seems to grow stronger. And we come out and we help each other. ”

Sheriff Ledbetter attended police academy with Malone. He tells us what kind of person Malone was. “Malone, he was a dedicated family man, he was a dedicated and loving husband, loving father, brother, son, and he’ll be greatly missed. He was very dedicated to the field of law enforcement for over 20 years between George County, Jackson County, and Greene County.”

Deputy Jeremy Malone will be missed by the community as well. George County resident Hayley Cobb said, “As caring, like he cared so much for the community. And would give you his shirt off his back and he would do anything to make sure you were safe. And if you needed anything, you could just ask and he was there, you know. I just want to send out a prayer for his wife and kids.”

A GoFundMe has been started to help with funeral expenses for Deputy Malone. If you would like to donate, click here.
