Tips to Celebrate New Year’s Eve Safely

December 28, 2023 — New Year’s Eve is a time to reflect on the previous year and welcome a new year and new beginning. Acadian Ambulance wants to remind everyone to celebrate safely and responsibly.
- Do not drink and drive. Have a designated driver, or call a driving service or cab.
- Wear your seatbelt.
- When driving, put your cell phone away.
- Drink water to stay hydrated throughout the night
- If you plan to drink, make sure to eat as well.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
Acadian Ambulance medics respond to a variety of incidents during the holidays, including firework injuries. However, many firework-related injuries can be prevented. We urge everyone who plans on adding personal fireworks to their New Year’s Eve celebrations to keep these tips in mind.
- Use fireworks outdoors only.
- Keep a hose or water bucket handy in case of fire.
- Use fireworks as intended. Never try to combine two different fireworks.
- Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes, then soak it in a bucket of water.
- Watch fireworks displays from a safe distance.
- Don’t allow anyone under the age of 12 to use fireworks of any type.
- Never try to substitute homemade fireworks or illegal explosives.
- Make sure pets are safe and away from fireworks.
For burns, remember:
- If clothes are on fire, remember to stop, drop and roll on the ground to smother the fire.
- Do not pick up or touch any burning debris.
- Cool the burn for up to 10 minutes with water.
