LHA 8’s christening happening tomorrow
Ingalls Ship Yard is prepping for the christening of one of its amphibious assault ships, the last ship of its kind being christened in 2017.
The shipbuilding company is hosting the ceremony for the American-Class Assault Ship Bougainville LHA 8.
The ship is named after the battle on the island of Bougainville in World War II.
The ship is 844 feet long with a 106-foot beam weighing more than 44,000 tons.
The ship will serve as a multi-functional ship capable of operating in high threat and multi-threat environments, while also being an integral member of an expeditionary strike group.
The ship is expected to be commissioned in another year, becoming the USS Bougainville and entering the naval fleet.
The christening of the ship will begin at 9 tomorrow and will be streamed on YouTube and Facebook on the Ingalls pages.
