St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church celebrating 204 years of service

One Pascagoula church is celebrating 204 years of service on Sunday, November 5th.

St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church on South Market Street is the oldest continuous Black congregation in the state of Mississippi.

The church was organized in 1819 by Dudley Brooks, a freed slave. Brooks was given his freedom after saving the life of his master’s wife.

St. Peter has been destroyed by hurricanes and fire, but has been rebuilt over the years.

The last time the church was destroyed was in 1971, being burned down and the current structure being built the same year.
