Memorial Health System offering breast cancer reconstructive surgery

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month starting in October, Memorial Health System Gulfport is offering a number of services for those battling the disease.

Memorial’s Gulfport Surgery Clinic is offering breast reconstruction surgery, 3D mammograms, and innovative breast cancer diagnostics to reduce the risk of catching cancer.

It’s one of the only clinics on the Coast providing a wide variety of breast reconstructive surgeries, including the DIEP flap reconstructive surgery that uses a patients natural body tissue instead of implants.

General Breast Surgeon Dr. Paul Mace tells us why the DIEP flap procedure is a much safer option. “The biggest thing we see is a much better long term cosmetic result for the patient because we’re using their own natural body tissues to perform the reconstruction rather than an implant or artificial material. We don’t have to worry about things like scar tissue forming around an implant or an implant wearing out or potentially rupturing 10, 15, 20 years down the road.”

Dr. Pace wants to remind women to get their mammograms every year and checking themselves at home at least once a month for bumps and lumps or lesions.
