Prison company returns to money state following auditor’s investigation

State Auditor Shad White’s office has announced the recovery of just over $5 million from a private prison company.

The management and training corporation has sent that money back to the state.

Auditor White’s office started investigating MTC back in 2021 amid complaints that the company was not providing the prison staff levels required by their contract with the state.

That investigation also found MTC failed to provide the minimum mandatory staff at prison facilities it managed to ensure inmate and employee safety.

Auditor White says an investigation into two other MTC operated prisons here in Mississippi will continue.
