28th Street Elementary students learn and engage with shark from MS Aquarium
It was a fin-tastic day as local elementary school students got to pet an aquatic animal.
The Mississippi Aquarium’s Mobile Marine Unit made its way down to 28th Street Elementary School, providing an opportunity for Kiwanis Club Students in third through fifth grades to learn and interact with an epaulette shark.
Kids were able to see and feel the tooth of a great white shark and also view shark skeletons and eggs.
After learning some interesting facts, students and staff took turns dipping their hands into the shark tank to conquer their fears. Student Taylour Haurrien said, “I though the shark was going to be hard, but it was soft. Feels like a soft blanket that you sleep with at night, like when you’re very cold, that’s what it felt like.”
Teacher Danielle Ledoux said, “It felt a little weird. It’s a little scary, but I did it. I did it. So, now I can officially say that I’ve touched a shark.”
The outreach program is part of the aquarium’s week of events for the Changing Tides Festival presented by Visit Mississippi.
