MLK Day of Service Diaper Drive

The average parent will spend $2,500 dollars in diapers for each child they have. For many parents along the Coast, the cost is just too high therefore many children are left in wet diapers for long periods of time.
This cycle can lead to rashes that turn into infections, negatively impacting the child’s health. So the United Way of South Mississippi has teamed up with South Mississippi Volunteer Center to host a diaper drive through the end of the week. Organizers say going without diapers can also have detrimental effects that go beyond the child’s health.
South Mississippi Volunteer Center Director Austin Coomer said, “Because of the risk of children not being able to go to daycare. Because a lot of time, when the parents do not have enough diapers, they’ll hold their child out of daycare which is then going to trail off. When they get to elementary school, they’re going to keep thinking that’s okay and continue being absent. We want to stop those as early as possible.”
All diapers will be accepted but there is an urgent need for sizes 4 to 7. You can drop off diaper boxes at the Knight Nonprofit Center and various Walmarts or Regions Bank branches in Hancock, Harrison and Pearl River counties.
