DMR Emergency Oyster Work Program

Dozens of frustrated fishermen attended the DMR’s emergency oyster work program meeting earlier today.
Under the program, commercial fishermen who had a license in 2011 will be paid by DMR disaster funds to relocate oysters from the western part of the Mississippi Sound and move them to eastern sections of the Sound and the Biloxi Back Bay.
Many fishermen expressed frustration after learning that their vessels must be insured to qualify for the program. Applications were available at this morning’s meeting and fishermen found out on the spot if they were eligible for payment.
Commercial fisherman Samuel Seals said, “Distribute them, send them out. We need them. I mean, I know I need them. I’m behind on my bills. I’ve got two kids in school, one in the oven. We need them.”
