Gulfport PD seeing increase in car break-ins

Gulfport police are advising citizens to make sure they lock their doors to their vehicles and reminding them of the ‘9 p.m. routine.’

The police department has seen an increase in vehicle burglary crimes in the past few weeks. Officers state these crimes are happening throughout the city in no particular area.

Gulfport police are informing citizens to remove any valuables from your cars and to turn on lights and insure you have security cameras around your house.

Public Information Officer Jason Ducre warns citizens to take protective measures against these crimes. “Lock your doors, hide your valuables. There are people out there that are breaking into cars. We’ve seen an uptick in vehicle burglaries lately. If you have something valuable or they think is valuable, they’ll break your window out. So something that’s valuable in your car, whether it’s a purse, a wallet, a book bag, hide it in your trunk, bring it in your house. These are crimes of opportunity. We need to limit those opportunities.”

The police department is asking citizens to report any break-ins even if nothing is missing.
