Harrison County organizations team up with Lowes for beautification project

Have you ever wondered what you can do with your recycled Christmas trees? A few local groups put their ideas to good use.

The Harrison County Board of Supervisors, District 2 Rebecca Powers, and the Harrison County Beautification Commission joined forces with Lowes Home Improvement to revamp the Senior Resource Center.

Lowes donated more than $900 worth of outdoor plants and materials for the courtyard makeover. Flowers and shrubbery were planted and mulch was spread as a result of the Christmas Tree Recycling project, sponsored by Mississippi Power.

Senior volunteers and Gulfport’s construction battalion gave their time to bring the courtyard back to life. Director for Retired Senior Volunteers Genna Smith said, “They came out and revamped this area. They pulled up debris and redid the gardens. It’s a really nice space for seniors that are coming through to sit and enjoy. They’ll come out and have lunch, and it’s a nice little courtyard that all the employees and the seniors that come through can enjoy.”

While in the courtyard, the seniors enjoy reading, visiting with family and friends, and eating their meals outside.
