Moss Point School District holds Back to School Rally

It’s the dog days of summer, but Moss Point students can soon call them school days as the district starts class this Thursday.

Families gathered at the Jerry Alexander Stadium for the district’s annual Back-to-School Rally. This event provides students with free supplies.

However, this year’s rally holds even greater significance. Just one month ago, a devastating tornado struck the community, leaving behind destruction.

Despite the hardships, the resilient community is rallying together for their students, ensuring their backpacks are ready to go for the new academic year. (“Do you think you have everything you need to get all As this year?”) Student Persiana Pugh said, “I think… I think… I just gotta go home and learn and then I’ll be all ready. ”

A member of the Ambassador of Hope Ministries, which is a community supporter, said, “Going back to school is outside of your natural habitat, and as far as bills go, it can be a strain on the parents. So, this is awesome that the community is coming together and giving back to the community.”

Members of Krewe of Renaissance said, “It is important for children to start off ready to be successful. If they are worried about supplies or need supplies, they are going to be focused on other things instead of what the teacher is trying to provide.”

Parent Jaques Roberts said, “I really like what the district is doing for us. It helps out a lot of people including me.”

Superintendent Dr. Oswago Harper said, “We just want to make sure we can elevate the burden off of our parents so they don’t have to go out and get things. And just provide this blessing to our children so they are prepared on day one.”

The district adopted a new schedule and is starting earlier this year. Even though their high school suffered tornado damage, all schools will be ready to welcome students on Thursday.
