Ocean Science Camp is underway at USM Marine Education Center

The Marine Education Center at Southern Miss welcomed campers back this year for a week of marine filled fun.

The week-long day camp offers 7th to 12th grade students an in-depth journey into ocean sciences. Campers have the opportunity to take a trip on the USM research vessel, explore a research facility, and build their own autonomous vehicle model.

Today’s adventures began with an hour of in-class learning followed by a day at the beach. The campers waded in the water in east beach, catching jelly fish, shrimp, and other marine life along the shore.

Lacy Lindsey is the marine education specialist at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Marine Education Center. She says marine life affects our lives every day, whether we realize it or not. “All of our ocean habitats and our coastal habitats affect everybody daily even when you don’t know about it. So, it’s really important for us to get that knowledge out to students in a really fun and engaging way by taking them to Deer Island, taking them to the beach, getting them on the trail.”

‘Magic of the Ocean’ is the theme of this year’s sea camp. Southern Miss has been holding sea camp for more than 35 years.
