Standing Water in Biloxi

Governor Phil Bryant has issued a state of emergency for Mississippi River flooding, which has no immediate effect on the Gulf Coast.
But other water is effecting the Coast, standing water in parts of Biloxi seem to be a real nuisance for residents trying to make their daily commute.
When it rains, it pours. That seems to be the sentiment Coast residents have toward weather this past week. Thunderstorms are turning into flood waters and flood waters are making driving that much harder for residents traveling through Biloxi. Resident Lindsey Griffin III said, “It’s really been a mess, as you can see all the flooding going on and everything. You gotta try to drive slow. You can have wrecks and everything. I’ve been hitting pot holes and messing up my tires and everything and it’s just ridiculous. I’m getting fed up with it, all that’s been going today with all this rain going on.”
The skies aren’t clearing up anytime soon. With rain continuing throughout the week, you can expect road conditions to only become more hazardous. Biloxi PD Public Information Officer Sergeant Jackie Rhodes said, “A good rule is if you can see the yellow line in the middle of the road then it’s probably going to be okay for you to go through it. If you can’t, don’t take a chance, especially on east Biloxi on Back Bay Boulevard and those areas right next to the bay. They flood easy.”
Those streets flood easily and infrastructure repairs have torn up much of the streets so there is no yellow line to look for. Driving on flooded streets is a danger in itself but then you have roads like Division Street where construction is ongoing, add flooding on top of that and it’s double trouble.
Griffin says his car slides on the mud and the flood waters cover pot holes completely, making them completely invisible.
Sgt. Rhodes tells News 25 on roads that are under construction, the best way to avoid a crash in standing water is to simply play it safe. “Don’t take a chance. Don’t take a chance and try to drive through the water. Turn around and take another route.”
Sgt. Rhodes says Biloxi has responded to multiple accidents throughout the day, all related to the wet road conditions.
