Better Water in East Jackson County

Residents in east Jackson County will soon see a difference in the quality of their faucet water.
Today, Jackson County officials cut the ribbon on a new $11 million surface water treatment plant. The “Class A” plant is one of the five surface water plants in the state. The facility will provide quality drinking water to residents in Escatawpa, Helena, Big Point and possibly Wade and Hurley.
Jackson County Supervisor John McKay said, “We came an eyelash away from losing the money for this on three or four different occasions. Had to go to Washington to talk to Congress. Had to go to Atlanta to talk to the EPA to convince them that this was a good project. They’ve supported us since that point in time. So the utility authority, Jackson County and the EPA began to work together and today we have this wonderful facility.”
The water plant has the ability to expand and produce up to three million gallons of potable water per day.
