Update on disaster declaration status for Moss Point

We have an update from Mayor Billy Knight regarding the disaster declaration to assist the Moss Point residents impacted by last Monday’s EF2 tornado.

According to the mayor, the city has done everything they needed to do on their end, including conducting a thorough damage assessment.

More than 300 homes and 80 businesses were damaged in some way by the tornado. The city submitted their report to the governor’s office last Friday.

Mayor Knight says now it is in the hands of the governor and MEMA to determine if the disaster meets the threshold to be recognized as a national disaster. “I ask our people to be patient with us because its out of our control. We know we are working on it. We feel positive that something can happen that for us will be good. We hope that’s the case. We ask the people to be patient with us.”

Mayor Knight isn’t sure when they’ll receive a response, but he’s feeling pretty optimistic that something positive will come out of it to benefit the city.
