City of Moss Point in recovery phase after tornado
It’s been exactly one week since the City of Moss Point was hit by an Ef2 tornado. Now, the city is entering the recovery phase.
Last Monday afternoon, the River City was knocked on its back by an Ef2 tornado. After just one week, Moss Point has moved into the recovery phase. Volunteer and Donations Coordinator Paige Roberts said, “We are starting to move from the response phase to the recovery phase, and what that basically means is that the supplies that we were desperately needing… water, clean up kits, tarps… we’ve got that covered. What we are looking for now, what help looks like is people who can give physical labor or at the very least can go out into the neighborhoods with some water and different supplies as people need them.”
Roberts went on to say the best way to help is to call 228-990-4222 to receive a specific volunteer assignment.
The variety of levels to physical labor include how to safely use chainsaws and put tarps on roofs, all the way to pulling debris to the side of the road for pick up.
If the volunteer assignments aren’t physically possible for you or its geographically difficult to take part, you can call or go to any Merchants and Marine Bank to give to the Rebuild Moss Point Fund.
It’s truly going to take an army to help Moss Point flourish in the now recovery phase, and Moss Point resident Cynthia Lucas demonstrates how you can make an impact volunteering by using your unique talents and abilities.
Lucas volunteers at the call center answering intakes and she directs them towards the specific help that they need. Because she is bi-lingual, it broadens the help that Lucas is able to give to the community. “I’m able to help the families that speak very little or broken English. I love coming here and helping for whatever I can do, so I just kind of bounce around and see where I’m needed at and next week I’m willing to go out and pick up a rake and start helping raking yards. Whatever the need is, that’s what I’m here for.”
