IMMS releases two sea turtles
The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies released two sea turtles in Pass Christian today and this is an extra special release.
The turtles, Delbert and Elee, are originally from Massachusetts and underwent long-term rehabilitation at the institute’s facility.
Every time the turtles come to the surface for a breath of air, their location is documented. Researchers are assessing how these relocated turtles adapt to their new habitat.
Previously released turtles have been tracked, but only during winter release. This marks the first summer release and Delbert and Elee will provide valuable data about seasonal differences. IMMS Stranding Coordinator Theresa Madrigal said, “Typically they go to Louisiana waters in the winter time and these turtles did pretty much the same thing. One went to the panhandle so he was the one little exception, but they seem to be following the same kind of patterns.”
The two turtles were named after Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann and First Lady of Mississippi Elee Reeves.
You can track them on IMMS’ website as they become accustomed to their new home in the Mississippi Sound
