Volunteers clean up tornado debris in Moss Point

Volunteers from across the Gulf Coast were in Moss Point over the weekend, helping with tornado cleanup and recovery.

Several church organizations, local high school sports teams, volunteers from Keesler Air Force Base, and many others spent Saturday and Sunday cleaning up debris.

Those directly impacted by the tornado were also able to pick up essentials like water and blue tarps. Groups like the United Cajun Navy and Mercy Chefs are still giving out meals to those in need.

Storm victims and city leaders say all the help is greatly appreciated during this time. Volunteer Teroy Johnson said, “My wife saw online that they had a lot of food and water but they needed more help. So, she said let’s go volunteer. So we came and they gave us places to go and it was worth it.”

Moss Point Ward 2 Alderman Darius Wilson said, “So, right now, we’re still in the preliminary stages, trying to figure out exactly where we are and what we need. We’re kind of passed that point of just what regular hands can do, there are many projects that are going to require heavy machinery and construction use.”

If you would like to volunteer, call the disaster recovery hotline at 228-990-4222.
