Tornado touches down in Moss Point

A tornado touched down in downtown Moss Point this afternoon.

The WXXV Weather Center reports the funnel cloud touched down about 2:50 p.m.

Reports are coming in of damage in the city and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has sent deputies to Moss Point to help.

Traffic northbound has been closed down at Jefferson Street and Main Street and traffic has been detoured to Highway 63.

Early damage reports are of damage to First Baptist Church on the west side, M&M Bank on Main Street next to Sonic is damaged and there is heavy damage to Moss Point High School, the gymnasium and the football field.

About 5,000 people are without power including City Hall. The outages affects customers with Singing River Electric and Mississippi Power. There is no timetable for restoration of power.

A storm chaser also posted photos on social media showing damages to residences in Moss Point.

WXXV has a reporter headed to Moss Point and will provide updates as they become available.
