June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month is observed every June as a chance to spread the word about different neurological diseases.

According to Memorial Health System Neurologist Dr. Lee Voulters, Alzheimer’s Disease is a problem that’s not going away.

Approximately 7 million American’s alone have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

Some of the ways to cope with the disease or any sort of dementia is to play brain games, do crossword puzzles, read, and play cards with friends to keep the brain working.

Dr. Voulters would also like to see a change in insurance for long-term care of Alzheimer’s patients. “It’s devastating to the family in terms of cost for long-term care which they have to pay for. Lost wages, lost income in family members that have to stay home and look after their loved ones. To put them into appropriate memory care centers or nursing homes is extremely expensive.”

Throughout the month, the Alzheimer’s Association is encouraging you to wear purple to support the movement.
