Gulf Coast VA responds to backlash over flying Pride flag

The Gulf Coast VA has received some backlash for flying a Pride flag.

The VA told News 25 that they have been receiving call after call from people asking why it is there. This is not the first time the VA has shown support for the LGBTQ+ community. In the past, they have hosted their own Pride events.

This is part of a new program, the special emphasis program, that is meant to recognize veterans that have not received recognition. This includes vets of different backgrounds, races, and sexuality.

For the VA, it is important to recognize the diversity in our troops, telling News 25: “We take care of everyone who wore the uniform. The most important thing is that veterans come to the VA and get the services they have earned.”

Chief of Community and Public Affairs Shaun Shenk also cited that this display “allows them to have open conversations with their providers.”
