Brewers number one prospect stars for Biloxi Shuckers
Biloxi Shuckers baseball is right around the corner and as the excitement for Opening Day continues to grow, so does the excitement for the highest-ranked prospect to ever come through the Gulf Coast.
Introducing Jackson Chourio, the 19-year-old phenom from Venezuela, also the top-ranked prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers farm system and the third-ranked prospect overall, according to Baseball America.
You’d have to go all the way back to 2015 with Orlando Arcia, the last time someone on the Shuckers was ranked in the top ten.
So far, Chourio has been on the fast track to the majors, reaching Double A as an 18-year-old, while hitting .288 across three levels with 20 home runs and 16 stolen bases last season.
Even though the hype is through the roof, Chourio remains humble. “I handle all of the hype well because my family keeps me grounded and they’re always supporting me. They are the best motivation in my life. I continue to work hard to be the best that I can. The truth is I have some talent, and you’ve just got to go out and keep playing and getting better, regardless of age, thanks to God. I’m working to get stronger and staying positive.”
Shuckers Manger Mike Guerrero said, “I think for any of the players, you’ve got to remind yourself that he’s only 19, and a lot of the high schoolers are 19 in high school, so he’s in Double-A competing with 25-year-old guys. Yes, he has great talent, incredible talent and so does everybody else, and we just need to let him flourish.”
Chourio says he models his game after Seattle Marines superstar Julio Rodriguez and he should be hitting first or second in the line up this year.
