78-year-old Gulfport Woman Raped inside Home
A nightmare unfolds for a 78-year-old Gulfport woman who was raped inside her home on 25th Street just before midnight. Meanwhile, neighbors and residents are doing their best to cope with this tragic crime in their neighborhood.
April McCrory stood among other residents on 25th Street in disbelief. “She’s not going to be able to function or walk her dog and feel at peace anymore ever again.”
Late Sunday night, a 78-year-old woman heard a suspicious noise in her yard. She walked outside only to be forced back into her own home and then raped. Resident Alpha Bass said, “Lord have mercy. This poor little lady, she don’t bother nobody. We just see her walking her dog and stuff. She don’t bother nobody, just a good friend and neighbor.”
Alpha Bass’ mother lives next door to the victim. Previously, the woman has confided in them that she’s walked outdoors to find her car battery stolen. “It’s probably somebody been watching and knows she doesn’t have any family or company at her home. Somebody been watching her, that’s probably real close to her,” said Bass.
Authorities are still unsure as to whom the suspect is but they know he’s a black male approximately 40 to 50 years old and still on the run. Meanwhile, a neighborhood remains on edge, fearing the suspect could strike again.
On 25th Street many woman live alone. There are also many families. April McCrory hopes this is a wake up call that will get neighbors more involved in each other’s lives and to watch over each other so something like this never happens again. “If you need a buddy system, always have somebody, a buddy system when you’re walking, daytime or nighttime. We need that and if you know something, let the police know,” said McCory.
If you have any information on this crime, please call the Gulfport Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
