Deadly Accident on I-10
One man is dead today after a multi-car accident on Interstate 10 in Hancock County. The accident closed off part of the interstate for hours. It left motorists stranded and victims shook up.
The accident happened in the eastbound lanes of I-10 near the Hancock County and Harrison County border. A semi-truck was on fire, strung across the road. Eye witnesses tried to get the driver out but the flames were too hot.
Chad Nicholas came across the fiery scene and tried to save the driver of the truck but wasn’t able. “It was just too late. No one could get to him.”
Kelly Schwartez was driving with her granddaughter right behind the semi-truck. “My granddaughter was hysterical.” Things only went from bad to worse. “The pieces of the truck were just coming at us, coming at our windshield and over the car,” said Schwartez.
Emergency crews worked for hours to clear the scene as eyewitnesses looked on. Chad Nicholas says it’s the worst thing he’s ever seen. “It was brutal, it wasn’t fun at all.”
The victim has been identified as 44-year-old Lewis Peak from Georgia. The driver of another truck was taken to the hospital.
