Gulfport High Robotics Club Awarded Grant
Gulfport High School’s robotics club edged out the competition and landed a $10,000 grant from an Ivy League college. The grant comes from Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam. Gulfport High was one of only 14 schools nation-wide chosen for this award.
The students were charged to come up with an idea that would benefit the community. Gulfport High students decided to build a robot to help veterans and the elderly get into boats along the Coast more easily. The money will go toward expanding the robotics club and creating more opportunities for future students.
Senior Peyton Bergin said, “We all really wanted to get it, we worked really hard. We all came in over the summer. We worked on it before the application was due at the beginning of the school year.” Junior Ashley Brock said, “It’s a really big, important opportunity and that’s going to set me apart from most college applicants which is really exciting.”
Through this program students get a head start in the college application process. They tell News 25 they hope to change the world.
