Report: Bret Bielema top candidate at USM
The Southern Miss program is in the midst of its most challenging season since 2012 and it’s search for a new head coach has taken an interesting turn.
As first reported by ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, former Arkansas and Wisconsin Head Coach Bret Bielema is considered to be a top candidate at USM alongside Tulane Offensive Coordinator Will Hall and Baylor Defensive Coordinate Ron Roberts.
According to another report by Steven Godfrey of Banner Society, Bielema has interviewed for multiple openings including Southern Miss.
Per the Sun Herald, the Bielema rumor mill doesn’t appear to have as much validity as the aforementioned reports would suggest, but only time will tell.
Bielema is currently on staff with the New York Giants as an outside linebackers coach and senior assistant.
Else where at Southern Miss, COVID-19 is still causing issues for the football program with Friday’s game at UTEP now canceled.
The Miners have temporarily suspended team activities, leaving the Golden Eagles with one last game on December 10th at home against Florida Atlantic.
USM just had to cancel its road game at UAB this past Friday due to coronavirus concerns.
Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles basketball team has suspended team activities until December 12th. They’ll lose three games, including one at home against Mississippi State.
