Bay Waveland School District moves school start date to September

Earlier today, The Bay Waveland School District Board of Trustees voted 5-0 to delay the opening of school until Tuesday, September 8, 2020.

After guidance and input from state health experts, the district believes this decision is in the best interest of the health and safety of all students and staff.

The decision is based on numerous factors related to COVID-19. At this point in time, the plan is for both students choosing to return to campus to “a safety enhanced traditional schedule” and students choosing distance learning will begin school on Tuesday September 8, 2020.

Extra-curricular activities governed by Mississippi High School Activities Association will continue as scheduled and will continue in keeping with the health and safety guidelines in place.

The shifting of opening day will cause some changes to the school calendar which will be announced at a later date.

Dr. Sandra Reed, Superintendent of BWSD, stated “the situation we are currently working with is quite fluid and all plans are subject to change based on current circumstances. I do not take these decisions lightly but I am committed to the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff. I think this is one step we can take to ensure that when our children return to school they can stay in school.”
