CASA of Harrison County hosting school supply drive
CASA has long been known as a non-profit group that helps children during the legal process and court proceedings in cases of alleged abuse or neglect.
CASA of Harrison County is collecting much-needed school supplies to help equip local children for the upcoming school year.
CASA Advocate Jourdan Hartshorn said, “If you want to donate book bags, please make sure they’re clear because of the simple fact that there are a lot of schools that are going to the clear.”
Advocates with CASA of Harrison County are going above and beyond as always, this time around to help lighten the load for local kids heading into the school year. “We’re actually here at CASA of Harrison County’s office. We’re actually doing a back-to-school donation drive for the 83 kids that we have, the 83 kids in our case load. What we’re trying to do is make sure they are successful this upcoming school year.”
You can help equip them to do just that. “We’re asking for index cards, folders, like this – glue, colors. Crayons are the most important because kids like to color.”
Just a few of the school supplies on the list and all donations are welcome. Just swing by the CASA of Harrison County building on Maples Drive in Gulfport, right behind Pass Road Elementary School. “If you have a donation, just come drop it off, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the next two weeks”
The last day of the school supply drive is Saturday, August 1st and CASA is hoping to fill all of their shelves for the distribution soon after. “We’ve already got some items here, which is awesome. Our goal is to fill 50 book bags, but if we could do more, we want more. That way, all year round these kids can come in and get resources.”
CASA advocates say every bit counts and is an investment in our future. “CASA, our national brand, our local brand, is about changing a child’s story. If we can help in the education part, and keep them in school and let them know we’re here to support them through their K through 12. We want to make sure they know they have the resources to continue their education because education is important. It gets you better opportunities and jobs and that’s what we’re here for is to change that child’s life and give them the resources they need to be successful.”
